Artist's Description

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb of the mint family. Although originally native to Europe, it has been successfully imported to many countries of the world where it is often considered to be a weed! The plant can grow as high as 3 feet, has lots of branches and can be recognized by its clusters of small white purple-spotted flowers at the ends of its stems.
Catnip contains various aromatic oils including one called nepetalactone, a mild hallucinogen.

When exposed to catnip some cats will rub (often with the chin and cheek areas), sniff, lick and eat the plant, sometimes followed by rolling over the plant. Following this contact with the catnip, behavioral changes are often seen. Most commonly reported signs of 'intoxication' include having a 'wild' or 'drunken' appearance, vocalization, rolling around in ecstasy. Affected cats look like they are having a really good time!!

About Elena Nosyreva

Elena Nosyreva

I was born and raised in Russia. I got my PhD degree in biology in St Petersburg State University (Russia) and continued my research work in the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1999, I moved to the United States to pursue my neuroscience research at the UT Southwestern Medical Center located in Dallas, TX. Being a scientist has been very rewarding in many aspects including creativity. However, I felt a compelling need to further express myself by taking an artistic journey. My artistic experimentation has evolved into a tremendously exciting form - mixed media collage, fine art photography, and digital art. I like experimenting with my photographs. I combine multiple images, textures, to crystallize an image that says something new...
