Description
View of Suzdal Kremlin from one of the side streets.
I tried to convey in my photographs the fascinating medieval architecture of Suzdal as the local people see it, as part of their everyday life.
Suzdal is one of Russia's most charming cities and part of Russia's historical Golden Ring of medieval towns. Following a devastating attack by a marauding Tatar army in the 14th Century, Suzdal's astonishing growth slowed and by the 16th Century, Suzdal had already become a political backwater, known mostly for the wealth of its monasteries and purity of its landscape.
Nowadays the town is filled with busy churches and monasteries and its streets are lined by colorful traditional wooden houses. Having survived the blight of Soviet town-planning, Suzdal looks much as it did centuries ago. On coming to Suzdal you would hardly figure out that you are in town, for everywhere there are churches, wooden and half-brick private houses with vegetable gardens, and there is almost countryside quietness. But it is therein that the charm of Suzdal lies.
