Collage has a long history as a folk art before it emerged as a fine art in the twentieth century, In Europe, Asia, and the Americas, all kinds of materials were transformed into mementos and decorations: pictures made of matchsticks; portraits silhouettes cut from paper and framed; fancy paper Valentines garnished with bits of lace and cutout papers; and pressed flower arrangements.
In the early 1900s, the modernist avant-garde adopted collage as a medium, making it an integral part of the evolution of modern art.
I look at collage elements as a puzzle which I have to put together, I move collage elements - images and papers; add paint and line work with crayons until I fill that I achieved some harmony and the pieces just feel right together.

I was born and raised in Russia. I got my PhD degree in biology in St Petersburg State University (Russia) and continued my research work in the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1999, I moved to the United States to pursue my neuroscience research at the UT Southwestern Medical Center located in Dallas, TX. Being a scientist has been very rewarding in many aspects including creativity. However, I felt a compelling need to further express myself by taking an artistic journey. My artistic experimentation has evolved into a tremendously exciting form - mixed media collage, fine art photography, and digital art. I like experimenting with my photographs.
