Description
A form of Christmas card began in England first when young boys practiced their writing skills by creating Christmas greetings for their parents, but it is Sir Henry Cole, the first director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, who is credited with creating the first real Christmas card. He commissioned artist John C. Horsley for the illustration. The card featured three panels, with the center panel depicting a family enjoying Christmas festivities and the card was inscribed with the message "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you".
Christmas Cards appeared in the United States of America in the late 1849s, but were very expensive and most people couldn't afford them. In 1975, a printer - Louis Prang started mass producing cards. In 1915, John C. Hall and two of his brothers created Hallmark Cards, who are still one of the biggest card makers today!
In more recent decades, the sending of physical Christmas cards has declined somewhat because of the widespread use of electronic mail.
However, many people still choose to send real Christmas cards, with close to 2 billion Christmas cards being sent each year in America alone.
