Description
This mixed media collage was inspired by Boro textiles.
Japan's mended and patched textiles are referred to as boro, or ragged. Boro is the clothing that was worn by peasants, merchants or artisans from 17th to early 19ty century. In feudal times not everyone could afford the lavish silk kimono. Clothes were crafted from cheaper materials, but no less beautiful that those worn by the upper classes. In most cases, the beautiful arrangement of patches and mending stitches was born of necessity and happenstance, and was not planned by the maker.
Literally translated as rags or scraps of cloths, the term boro is also used to describe clothes and household items which have been patched up and repaired many times.
