Description
The Esders and Scheefhals building is a monumental building, originally a department store, in St Petersburg Russia. The building is located at the Red Bridge over the Moika River.
Until 1919 it functioned as the “S. Esders and K. Scheyfals Trading House”. It was an undertaking of Stefan Esders, who had a factory in Brussels and department stores in Berlin, Paris, Rotterdam, Breslau and Vienna in addition to St. Petersburg. Scheefhals was the Dutch partner for the St. Petersburg branch.
After the revolution, in 1919, the building became a sewing factory producing menswear. The cupola was torn down in the 1930's in order not to spoil the view of the Admiralty tower.
The building underwent extensive renovation in 2011-12, and the cupola was rebuilt. The original department store signage, in French and Russian (with pre revolutionary spelling), has also been restored. The building is set to reopen in 2013 housing a shopping mall, office space, apartments and restaurants.
The Red Bridge, is a single-span bridge across the Moika River.
The first cast iron bridge on the site was designed and built in 1808-1813. In 1953 the original cast iron structure of the bridge was replaced by the welded steel arches but most of the decorations are left intact.
The bridge's name dates from a 19th-century tradition of color-coding the bridges crossing the Moika River. Like other colored bridges, the Red Bridge got its name from the color of its sides facing the river.
